The maths of gambling is simple: over the long run, it always favours the house.
Probability and payout
A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets. A bet on red wins in 18 of 37 cases (48.6%) but pays as if the chance were 50%. The difference — 2.7% — is the house edge. It's small in one spin and unavoidable over thousands.
