Responsible Gambling
For Family & Friends
Problem gambling doesn't only affect the person who gambles. Family and friends need tools and support too.
Starting the conversation
- Choose a calm moment — not right after a loss or an argument.
- Talk about specific facts and your own feelings: "I'm worried when I see…".
- Avoid labels and ultimatums you can't follow through on.
What not to do
- Don't pay off someone else's debts without a plan for change.
- Don't hand over money "one last time".
- Don't take on responsibility for another adult's decisions.
Protect yourself
Separate accounts, control over shared cards, limits on credit lines. Look after your own wellbeing too — groups like Gam-Anon exist specifically for families.
